 'A Poet's Song' is a literary festival taking place in Dundalk and it's rural hinterland.  There are various initiatives which will develop local participation with strong educational and community elements including creative writing masterclasses, drama performances, a series of literary lectures and an exhibition of the work of the local poet Jim Craven.

2nd July - 6th August 2007 - A  Midsummer Festival

 

3.  Creative Writing Masterclasses

In conjunction with the Louth County Library, a professional writer & facilitator, Michael Collins, conducted a series of masterclasses.  Participants will read from their completed work to a public audience during the festival.

Aspiring writers are also invited to read from their own works.

Tues 10th July, 7.30pm - County Museum, Dundalk

  1.  A Poets Song Exhibition

 Follow the life story and writings of the poet Jim Craven designed by Li Ciaglo, Director of Performing Arts, Bay Path College, MA, USA.

Mon 2nd July – Mon 6th August – County Museum, Dundalk

 

2.  Poetry Competition 

Our annual poetry competition for students from primary and secondary schools is in it's 22nd year and this year, an adult section has been introduced.  The competition was for the first time organised with the assistance of the Dundalk Democrat, a regional newspaper in the north east.  A short story competition was also promoted by this newspaper. 

Award Ceremony - Thurs 5th July 8.00pm - County Museum, Dundalk

4.  Ballad Night

 Ballads and musical parodies performed by Pat Johnston, PJ Callan, Mary Reilly and Jim Johnston.

Thurs 12th July, 8.00pm – County Museum, Dundalk.

5.  Poetry Readings

‘ Jim listen, we’re talking- “

A recital from the poet, Jim Craven’s work involving local actors Doc Laverty, Paul McGee and Deirdre Craven.

Thurs 19th July, 8.00pm – County Museum, Dundalk.

    

 

6.  Full Length Stage Play

Premiere of 'The Smugler's Sacrafice', a play written by Jim Craven described by John B. Keane as ' a totally dynamic genius'.  The play has a local theme re-inacting familiar events on the border near Dundalk, performed by Castle Players.

Wed 25th - Sat 28th July, 8.00pm - An Táin Theatre, Dundalk.

 

 

 

7.  Pub Drama

'Look out and keep your head down' - Pub Drama is back.

Thurs 19th July, 8.30pm - The Spirit Store, Dundalk.

Friday 27th July, 8.30pm - Oriel Park, Dundalk.

 

8.  Lectures & Educational Programme

A series of academic lectures and poetry analysis.

Conducted by Li Ciaglo, Director of Performing Arts, Bay Path College, MA, USA. and Paddy Craven, Poet's brother.
